Consoles and games: how to compare bundle prices without overpaying
A console bundle is only a saving if you wanted the game and the extras inside it; price the parts separately before deciding.
Console pricing is unusually transparent in the UK: most retailers sell at or near the manufacturer’s price, so the differences appear in bundles, trade-in offers and the price of games. Start by deciding which console version you want (standard, handheld-only or the newer generation), then price the console alone.
What to compare
- The console on its own, from at least three retailers
- Bundle contents valued individually: a digital game code is often worth less than its printed price
- Storage included and the cost of expanding it
- Accessories you will actually need, such as a second controller or a case
- Returns policy and whether the retailer sells refurbished stock with a warranty
Accessories and spare parts tend to crowd out the console itself in search results, so compare prices on the exact console name first and treat accessories as a separate decision. Game prices fall quickly after launch; comparing a title across shops a few months later usually beats any bundle discount.
