Cast-iron casserole dishes: what you pay for and what you do not
Enamelled cast iron ranges from £30 to over £300; size, lid fit and enamel quality explain most of the difference.
A cast-iron casserole will outlast most kitchen purchases, which is why the premium brands cost what they do. The useful comparison is not brand against brand but size, weight and enamel finish against how you cook. A 24 cm round dish suits most households; 28 cm and oval shapes are for joints and larger families.
What to compare
- Capacity in litres and the diameter that fits your hob rings and oven
- Weight when full: large dishes are heavy to lift in and out of the oven
- Interior enamel colour: light interiors show browning, dark ones hide staining
- Lid knob material and the oven temperature it is rated for
- Guarantee length and whether chipped enamel is covered
Premium brands are discounted most often in department-store sales and on discontinued colours, where the same dish can be a third cheaper. Supermarket and own-brand cast iron is usually fine for stews and bread; the difference shows in enamel durability over years. Compare the exact size across retailers rather than the brand’s headline price.
